Reading Ambassadors attend Carnegie Awards ceremony in London
Posted on: 23/06/2025On Thursday 19th June, The Reading Ambassadors were very excited to travel to London to attend the ceremony for this year's Carnegie Awards.
The Carnegie Awards are Britain's oldest and most prestigious awards for children's literature. There is a medal for illustration and a medal for writing. In recent years, we have watched the awards ceremony via livestream, but this year we were lucky enough to get places to watch the ceremony live at the Cambridge Theatre in London! Having been reading the shortlist for the Medal for Writing for the last few months (special congratulations to Tabitha, who managed to read all 8 of the shortlisted books!) we were keen to see who would be crowned the winner!
Before the winners were announced, we heard from the authors and illustrators about their top tips for writing and drawing, as well as interesting facts about their books. For the writing award, 'King of Nothing' by Nathanael Lessore won the Shadowers' Choice award, which is voted for by students, and 'Glasgow Boys' by Margaret McDonald won the overall award, which is judged by a panel of librarians. 'Homebody' by Theo Parish won the Shadowers’ Choice Medal for Illustration, while Olivia Lomenech Gill won the Medal for Illustration for her beautiful work on Clever Crow, written by Chris Butterworth.
There were lots of emotional speeches as the winners accepted their awards; this was clearly something that meant a great deal to them.
It was a lovely day out and we hope we will be able to go again next year!
